W.Va. high school football coach charged in death

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Mount View High School head football coach Leon Steven Gravely is facing charges in connection with the death of a 70-year-old man struck and killed while riding his bicycle.

A Raleigh County grand jury indicted the 42-year-old Gravely on Monday on charges of negligent homicide, reckless driving, failure to maintain control and speeding.

A message left for a Leon S. Gravely in Kimball wasn't immediately returned Tuesday. Mount View is located in Welch.

Leon is a wonderful man and I am proud to say he is my friend. May God be with him and his family during this difficult time. Why on Earth this is being taken to court is beyond me. I can't believe people ride bikes right beside busy roads. I think they have to take some responsibility for their negligence.

I went to college with Leon at Concord. He was a good guy and was always friendly. I hope that this can get resolved without ruining his life forever. He was a good coach and loves what he does.

I resent the comment OLD MAN by Mr Anonymous.Charlie could ride his bike from Beckley to SETH Wv to vist his 93 year Uncle Hasque on any given day, which is a 110 mile round trip...Could Mr Anonoymous do that....I don't think so. Any one making comments, should get some facts about the "OLD MAN"

Coach Gravely is a good man who had a tragic accident that could have happened to anyone. He has shown great remorse for the man's death. The prosecutor and the police should be ashamed of themselves for bringing these unjustified charges. If Gravely was the Beckley coach, or if he was white instead of African-American, does anybody believe he would have been charged?
