FUTURE EVENTS
Charleston Parks and Recreation will sponsor a movie night with "Alvin and the Chipmunks" at 6 p.m. Friday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. The center also will host the 2008 Punt, Pass and Kick Competition at 10 a.m. Saturday. Children ages 8-15 are eligible. The program is free. For information, call 348-6404.
St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor a Fun Day Party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the hospital's courtyard, 333 Laidley St. The event celebrates WVU's football team and includes a West Virginia Tent where WVU gifts may be purchased. A WVU autographed football will be raffled at 3 p.m. A doughnut-eating contest will be held at noon. There will be crafts, flea market items, jewelry, gift shop clearance items and more. Proceeds will be used for scholarships, hospital employees' Emergency Fund, domestic violence programs and donations to the Hospital.
Brooks Family Benefit Rodeo will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the West Virginia State Fairgrounds. Bull riding, chute, goat tying, breakaway calf roping, barrel racing, kids events and prizes, benefit auction, concessions and more will be featured. Dogs must be on a leash. Magic Valley Kennel Club will sponsor a Responsible Dog Ownership Day with fun and games from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Magic Island, Kanawha Boulevard. Admission is free. Agility, obedience and rally demonstrations will be presented. AKC Canine Good Citizenship testing will be $5 per dog. Proceeds will go to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association. Dignity Hospice will have its annual Memorial Walk Saturday at Chief Logan State Park. Everyone is invited to join in for music, food, special activities for children and more. Dignity Hospice will also host volunteer training starting at noon Sept. 26 at the Chapmanville office. For information, call 855-4764.

West Virginia State University will host a Students Matter Most Walk-A-Thon at 9 a.m. on Saturday to raise funds for student scholarships. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the Erickson Alumni Center. The five-mile walk will begin there and travel through Dunbar before returning to the campus for a cookout. Participation is free to people willing to seek sponsors to support the event; those interested in simply walking can pay $10 registration. Participants will receive a meal, armband and T-shirt. Autism Society of W.Va., South-Central Chapter will have its Walk for Autism Awareness at 1 p.m. Sunday at Coonskin Park, Gorman Shelter. Fee is $20. The walk route will be around the lake and back to the shelter. Food, music, door prizes and more. For information, call 727-9543.
Kanawha Trail Club will meet for an Ansted Rail Trail hike at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The hike is about 4 miles. Carpool from Ohio and Randolph streets. Regroup at Hawk's Nest Lodge parking lot off U.S. 60. Easy hike to New River and back. Afterward, hikers will stop at Chimney Corner Café for supper and entertainment. For information, call 342-8755.
Covenant House Fall Festival, sponsored by Valley Gardens, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at 1109 Piedmont Road. A "Build Your Own Scarecrow" project will be available for $10, which includes all materials. Participants can bring clothing from home. The George Washington High School band will provide music and a hot dog stand will be open. Kids' activities include face painting, arts and crafts, and story time. Gardening tips, a seminar and fall planting specials will be offered throughout the day. For information, call 342-4636.
Putnam County Parks and Recreation Commission and Convention and Visitors Bureau will hold a Car Show from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Valley (Wave Pool) Park.
