Anniversaries/homecomings

  • South Ruffner Freewill Baptist Church will have its homecoming fellowship services at 7 p.m. nightly, Sunday through Sept. 28. Speakers and services include: Monday, Burt Hall; Tuesday, Pastor Robert McCallister of Emmons Church; Wednesday, Rex Lewis; Thursday, John Hudson of Slaughters Creek Church; Friday, Pastor Allen Young of Cornerstone Church; Sept. 27, a Youth Rally; and Sept. 28, homecoming services with Pastor Kenny Samms preaching at the morning service.
  • Lens Creek Baptist Church at Hernshaw will have its homecoming services and dinner from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday at the church.
  • The 20th anniversary for Church in the Valley, 1173 James River Turnpike, Milton, will be held Sept. 28 at the church. Forgiven will perform special music at 10 a.m. The church children and Forgiven will perform at the 11 a.m. service. Church pastor, Dr. Stan Maynard, will preach. Dinner will be served in the Friendship Hall at noon. A nursery will be provided. There will not be an evening service. For information, call 743-4500 or 743-3379.
  • Blue Creek Advent Christian Church will have its homecoming service on Oct. 5. The Gospel Treasures will sing at 10 a.m. The Rev. Rick Sams will bring the message at 11 a.m. Dinner will be served at noon.
  • Mountain Heights Church will celebrate its 50th anniversary at 1 p.m. Sept. 28 at the church located in Spring Hill. The Rev. Alan Stewart will speak and singers include Portal, Chuck Taylor and the Royalmen.
  • Clendenin Advent Christian Church will have its homecoming at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 5 at the church. Pastor Nahum Balser will be guest speaker and The Believers will sing. Dinner will follow the service. 
  • Homecoming services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at Sumerco Church of God. The group, 3 Generations, will sing and dinner will be served following the worship service. For more information, call Pastor Richard McCallister at 524-7390.
  • Grapevine Chapel in Sissonville will hold its annual homecoming services beginning 10 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Paul Arthur will preach and the church singers will sing during the morning service. Lunch will be served at noon. The Living 4 Him gospel group will sing during the afternoon song and praise service.
  • The Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Chesapeake will hold its 88th church anniversary at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Pastor George Ford, a Chesapeake native, from Word of Life Christian Center in Farmington, N.M., will be guest speaker. The Spiritual Harmonizers will provide music. Dinner will be served immediately following the morning service.
  • Heizer Creek Community Church will have its homecoming services at 10 a.m. Sunday. Youth choir will sing. Pastor Randy Carter will speak in the morning service. Lunch will be served at noon. The Pomeroys and Church Singers will sing at 1:30 p.m. and Pastor Tory Lilly will be preacher. For information, call 345-8418.
  • Abundant Life Ministries and Pastor Wayne R. Crozier will continue celebrating its 10th church/pastoral anniversary at 7 p.m. today. Guest speaker will be Bishop Kenneth Lisath of New Jerusalem Christian Center, Ironton, Ohio. Special music will be provided by Minister Quandora Hornbuckle. Guest speaker at 11 a.m. on Sunday will be Elder Dwight Bright of Faith Temple of Deliverance, Beckley.
  • Missionary anniversary services will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Guest minister will be the Rev. Franklin Murphy of Calvary Baptist Church, Huntington.
  • Crown Hill Free Will Baptist Church will hold its annual homecoming services at 10 a.m. Sept. 28. The Expressions and Brittany Richo will sing in the morning service. Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. with Faith Harmony Boys singing and the Rev. John Cantley preaching.
  • Newton Baptist Church at Newton will have its 60th annual homecoming on Sunday. Services begin at 9:30 a.m. Adult and young choirs will sing. Squire Parsons Jr. will sing in the morning service and the message will be by Pastor Darius Walker. Lunch will be served in the fellowship hall downstairs beginning at 12:30 p.m. A gospel hymn sing-along will be held at 1:45 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
  • Homecoming services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at Lone Oak Church, W.Va. 34 N., Red House. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. An afternoon service will follow with John Taylor as speaker and New Horizon group as singers.
  • The West Virginia Home Mission Church, 1109 Benamati Ave., Nitro, will hold its annual homecoming celebration at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Guest speaker will be Linden Reed and there will be special singing.
  • Homecoming services will be held Sunday at Scott Depot Bible Church (formerly Scary Free Will Baptist Church), 4956 Teays Valley Road, Scott Depot. The Rev. Don Cummings and the Rev. Robert Morris will speak. Singers will be Safe Harbor, the church choir and others. Lunch and supper will be provided. For information, call 755-4750.
  • Pilgrim Home Missionary Baptist Church, 7015 Kanawha St., St. Albans, will have its 85th church anniversary on Sunday. Special guest for the 10:45 a.m. morning worship service will be the Mount Olivet Association Foreign Missionary Owen Watson from Jamaica. Guests for the 3 p.m. service will be the Rev. Isaac Kinney, choir and congregation of First Baptist Church of Powellton.

  • A one-day "Transformed" Christian conference/seminar with actor Kirk Cameron and the Way of the Master ministries will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 at the Clay Center, One Clay Square. The event is free: however, seating is limited. Speakers include: Kirk Cameron from TV series "Growing Pains," the "Left Behind" movies and current Christian TV show "The Way of the Master" and various other movies, including the upcoming Christian movie set to release in theatres this month called "Fireproof"; Ray Comfort, founder/president of WOTM ministries, host of TV show WOTM, best-selling Christian author and pastor; Todd Friel, pastor, host of international radio show WOTMR, host of Christian TV show "Wretched," and Christian author; and Emeal Zwayne, vice president of the WOTM ministries and pastor.   • The Nitro Church of Christ is sponsoring a coat and clothing giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 27. A free lunch will be served upstairs at the church, located at the corner of Main Avenue and Lock Street, Nitro.
  • Nitro Church of God, 15th Street and Second Avenue, Nitro, will have its Harvest Fest on Oct. 4. Hot dogs, baked beans, macaroni salad and a huge bake sale will be featured from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gigantic rummage sale hours are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Asbury United Methodist Church will sponsor a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday in the church hall, 501 Elizabeth St. The menu is spaghetti with meat or marinara sauce, tossed green salad, bread, dessert and drinks. Carry-out is available. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 or younger. For information or tickets, call 343-7194.
  • A bi-annual gigantic yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 4606 Kanawha Turnpike, South Charleston. The church-wide sale will feature many items. Hot dogs will also be sold.
  • Metropolitan Bible Institute will offer a "Survey of the Old Testament" from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays. The cost is $70. Call 342-4766 for information.
  • Bethel Baptist Church of Spring Hill will sponsor a humongous flea market-bazaar from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in the church activity building, 5028 Kentucky St. A wide variety of merchandise will be available. Food and refreshments will be sold.
  • Music

  • A benefit gospel sing for Fair Haven Christian School will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 27 at John Slack Park, located three miles up Campbells Creek. In case of rain, the event will moved to Fair Haven Church, Campbells Creek. The Laborers Quartet, Frontline Quartet and Been Redeemed groups will perform.
  • A gospel sing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Elk Community Center, Elkview. Good News Singers will perform. The concession stand will be open and donations will be accepted at the door for the singers.
  • Rhonda Pauley will be singing at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at Leon Baptist Church.
  • Thorofare Community Church will have special singing by Nicholas Naylor in the 7 p.m. service on Sunday at the church located on Thorofare Road in Clendenin. For directions, contact Pastor Claude Holley at 395-4423.
  • King's Harmony will sing at 7 p.m. Sunday at Charleston Mountain Mission Church, 1600 Seventh Ave. The Rev. Fairley McCormick will speak.
