The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department has begun the 2008 Flu Shot Campaign, targeting at-risk populations throughout Kanawha County.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends flu shots for all children ages six months to 18 years old; pregnant women; those 50 years of age and older; those with chronic health conditions; nursing homes and other long-term care facility residents; people at high risk for flu complications; out-of-home caregivers of children less than six months of age; health-care workers; or anyone who does not want to get the flu.

The Health Department will give shots at local senior centers, senior residential apartments and communities throughout Kanawha County. Flu immunizations will be offered to the general public on a walk-in basis on Oct. 14 and will be open daily, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the end of November.

Children's clinics will be held from 8 to 10:30 a.m. each Friday for children ages 10 and under. Flu mist, an intranasal mist, is available for children ages 2 to 18.

The cost of the flu shot is $14 for ages 6 to 35 months and $30 for ages 3 years and up. The cost of the pneumonia shot is $14. A second vaccine is recommended for children 6 months to 8 years the first time they receive the flu vaccine. KCHD can bill the following insurances: Advantra Freedom, Blue Cross, Carelink, Carelink Medicaid, CHIPS, Freedom Blue, Humana, Medicare Part B, PEIA, Secure Horizon, Straight Medicaid, UMWA and Unicare Medicaid. Bring a copy of your insurance card.
