Press protected Chuck Yeager after fabled flight under city bridge
This rendering by city native Hal Bergdahl recreates Chuck Yeager's famous flight under the South Side Bridge in his F-80 "Shooting Star" jet 60 years ago. Yeager startled spectators by swooping under the bridge during the boat racing championships on Oct. 10, 1948.

A sleek new F-80 jet piloted by Capt. Chuck Yeager sits on the unfinished tarmac at recently opened Kanawha Airport on Oct. 10, 1948. Later that day, the maverick Hamlin pilot noted for breaking the sound barrier, among other things, flew the plane under the South Side Bridge.
