Charleston student wins Scripps Howard award
The Scripps Howard Foundation announced scholarship recipients to college journalism students from across the United States through its annual Top Ten Scholars program.
Journalism and communication schools nominate one full-time student as their representative in the competition. From the pool of candidates, a panel of newspaper, broadcast and television network professionals chose 10 recipients for the $10,000 scholarship. The one-time award is applied toward a full academic year.
The winner in our area was Elaine McMillion of Charleston. She is a senior at West Virginia University, majoring in news editorial and communications. She has worked on the student newspaper and radio staffs, contributed to Lawyers & Leisure Magazine in Charleston, freelanced for the Dominion Post in Morgantown and interned at the Charleston Daily Mail. She also spent this spring studying in Aalborg, Denmark.

'When I Grow Up' essay contest open to students
Submissions to the second-annual "When I Grow Up" contest, sponsored by SMART529 and the West Virginia State Treasurer's Office, are currently being accepted.
The "When I Grow Up" contest allows students to submit, in 100 words or less, an essay that answers what they want to be when they grow up and why. Entries will be judged on originality, creativity and the importance of post-secondary education.
Three age group winners (K-1, 2-3, 4-5) will be judged in each of the five regions, for a total of 15 winners.
The 15 winners will be awarded a $500 college savings account and will be notified in November about a news conference to announce the grand prize winner, who will win an additional $4,500 SMART529 scholarship. Each regional winner's school will receive a $500 cash prize.
Entry forms are available at www.SMART529 and at elementary schools throughout the state.
SMART529 is a qualified tuition program issued by the West Virginia Prepaid College Tuition and Savings Program Board of Trustees and administered by Hartford Life.
