A 2,000-gallon aquarium filled with fish from the Kanawha River will be on display in the parking lot of Laidley Tower at 500 Lee St. E. in downtown Charleston today and Wednesday.

The Life Below the Waterline display, sponsored by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, is designed to showcase fish diversity in the region's rivers and streams.

Biologists from ORSANCO and the state Division of Natural Resources will capture fish to be used in the display by electro-fishing a section of the Kanawha.

Electro-fishing involves placing an electrical current in the water strong enough to temporarily stun the fish, which are netted and placed in the aquarium.

When the ORSANCO staff prepares the aquarium for its next move, the fish will be returned to the Kanawha unharmed.

Biologists will be at the display both days starting at noon to talk about the fish and other aquatic life in the Kanawha River.

ORSANCO is a water pollution control agency focusing on the Ohio River and its tributaries, encompassing agencies from eight states and the federal government.

Its governing board will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday at Charleston Embassy Suites.
