Anniversaries/homecomings

  • Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1530 Third Ave., will celebrate its 100th anniversary at 11 a.m. Oct. 19 at the church. The Rev. Ronald English will speak. Music will be provided by the Martin Luther King Jr. Male Chorus. The Rev. David L. Chapman, pastor of High Street Baptist Church, Roanoke, Va., will speak at the 4 p.m. service and the High Street Male Chorus will provide music.
  • Levi First Missionary Baptist Church, 5125 Church Drive, Rand, will celebrate its 92nd church anniversary on Sunday. A skit, "I Go A'fishin'," will be presented at 2:15 p.m. The anniversary sermon will be delivered by the Rev. Shelly Bausley, pastor of Pilgrim Home Baptist Church, St. Albans. The choir and congregation of Pilgrim Home Baptist Church will also be guests.
  • West Dunbar Community Church will have its homecoming at 10 a.m. Sunday at the church. The Rev. Marvin Welch will be guest speaker. Special singing by the Laborer's Quartet will start at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will follow the singing. There will not be an afternoon service.
  • First Church of God, 1234 Payne Ave., Dunbar, will celebrate its homecoming in conjunction with the 84th anniversary of the church on Oct. 19. There will be special music at 9:30 a.m. The Rev. Russell Whitener, pastor of the First Church of God in New Martinsville, will speak at the 10:30 a.m. service. A carry-in luncheon will be held at noon in the church activity building. The Rev. Whitener will preach at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 and at 7 p.m. Oct. 20-22. A nursery will be provided.
  • The First Missionary Baptist Church of Powellton will celebrate the Rev. William and Gloria Kinney's seven years of faithful service on Sunday. Sunday school will begin at 9:45 a.m., with worship services at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The 3 p.m. guest speaker will be the Rev. Cornell Byers. Dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m.
  • Metropolitan Baptist Church Queen Esther Ministry will celebrate its 92nd anniversary at 6 p.m. Sunday. Guest will be the Rev. Lenoris Dixon and Shiloh Baptist Church.
  • The First Baptist Church of Vandalia will have its 92nd church anniversary services at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Philemon H. Dillard will speak at the 11 a.m. morning service. Dinner will follow at 1 p.m. The Rev. Michael Poke will speak at the 3 p.m. service, along with the St. Paul Baptist Church choir and congregation of St. Albans.

  • The Boulevard Seventh-day Adventist Church will sponsor a Christ Centered 12 Step Recovery for Addictions meetings held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. each Friday, beginning this week. The church is located at 622 Kanawha Blvd. W. For information, call 346-7771.
  • A hot dog and bake sale will begin at 10 a.m. today at The Meadowbrook Freewill Baptist Church, W.Va. 114 North.
  • Alyce Faye Bragg will be the featured speaker at the Christian Women's Brunch, held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the historic Chilton House, located at #2 Sixth Ave., St. Albans. Bragg is a columnist for the Saturday Gazette-Mail and is author of several books. She will be sharing her favorite stories from her rich family heritage. Terri Smith will be the guest vocalist. The speaker, Arlene Kinnell of Westerville, Ohio, will share "How to be happy with who you are in spite of imperfections."  A complimentary nursery is provided with reservations. The cost is $12.   • There will be a prosperity workshop at Unity of Kanawha Valley Church from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the church, 3102 Blaine Blvd. John "Mo' Money" Moore, The Debt Free Guru, will present "The Secret to Simple & Lasting Personal Wealth."   • There will be a Women's Conference beginning at 7 p.m. daily, Oct. 24 and 25 at Mary Virginia Gospel Tabernacle, 830 Georges Drive, Malden. Justified will be singing and Autumn Truman speaking. There is no charge on Oct. 24 and the event is open to all genders. The cost is $10 on Oct. 25 and will cover lunch and snacks. The conference begins at 9 a.m. on Oct. 25 and the Women's Ministry from Maranatha Fellowship will be presenting "Fashioned by Jesus" as well as Rose Fisher singing.   • Bream Center's "Playhouse," located at 317 Washington St. W., corner of Washington Street and Ohio Avenue, offers an hourly drop-off program where preschool children participate in a variety of activities appropriate to their developmental level.   • Trinity United Methodist Church, 2626 Pennsylvania Ave., U.S. 119 at Mink Shoals, will have its annual Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 25. There will be a general store, varieties of nuts, homemade cinnamon rolls, a bake sale and hot dogs. Tables may be rented for $10 each for individuals to sell their wares.   • Winfield United Methodist Women will sponsor a Fall Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 17 and 18. The church is located behind McDonald's on U.S. 35. Homemade soups and hot dogs will be for sale along with a variety of crafts. Proceeds will benefit the WUMW's sponsored events throughout the year. Call 586-3795 for information. 
  • First Baptist Church of Tyler Mountain, located at 5219 Alpine Dr., Cross Lanes will begin the CenterShot Archery Program for ages 8 to 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Thursday. The nine-week program meets on Thursdays, except for Thanksgiving. The archery program will be well supervised and safety will be a top priority.   • The Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 520 Kanawha Blvd. W., will offer a free film series on the third Friday of the month. The next film, shown at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17, will be "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song (2007)," a documentary on the life and music of folk singer/social activist Pete Seeger. Also featured will be Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Tom Paxton and Bruce Springsteen. The film will be shown with captions for the hearing impaired.   • Greater Emmanuel Gospel Tabernacle and Bishop Norman Jones will assemble for a Weekend of Word (WoW) from Friday through Oct. 19 at the church, located at 1546 Third Ave. Guest speakers include 7 p.m. Friday, Darrin Freeman and Metropolitan Baptist Church choir and congregation; 5 p.m. Oct. 18, Wanda Shelton and New Jerusalem Non-denominational Church choir and congregation; and 5 p.m. Oct. 19, Ethel Caffie-Austin and Kimberly Church of God in Christ congregation. 
  • The Usher Board of St. Paul AME Church, 1108 Second Ave., will have its annual fall bazaar beginning 8 a.m. on Oct. 18. Tools, collector's items and more will be featured. There will also be a sale of hot dogs, fish, barbecued chicken and pinto beans with all the fixings. Vendor tables are available for rental.   • The Ladies of My Sisters' Keeper will present the Leadership Retreat 2008 "Birthing New Beginnings, Shall You Not Know It!" Friday through Oct. 19 at Ferguson Memorial Baptist Church. A praise and worship service and workshops will be featured at 7 p.m. on Friday. Workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 with an evening service beginning at 8 pm. Guest speaker will be Connie Baker of Burton, Mich. A prayer breakfast will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 19 at the Ramada Inn in South Charleston. Guest speakers Oct. 19 will be Pastor Tina M.   • Power House of Deliverance Church, 512 Carver St., Dunbar, will have its 8th annual Empowerment Women's Conference Thursday, Friday and Oct. 18. The theme is "Daughters Claim Your Inheritance." Services begin at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Speaker Thursday will be first lady Linda Ealy of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church. Speaker Friday will be Co-Pastor Renee Dixon of Salvation & Praise International Ministries. Services on Oct. 18 will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Speakers will be Minister Joyce Knotts, Terri Davenport, Minister Cheryl Hutchens, Denise Smith and Evangelist Victoria Timbers.   • Metropolitan Baptist Church will have Bible study on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. The topic is "The History of the Baptist Church." Bible study classes are also held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and the topic is "Church History." The cost is $70.   • The Songsmen and Linda will be singing at 6:30 p.m. today at the Cedar Grove Fall Festival. They will also sing at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Pond Gap Advent Christian Church and at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at Arnette Assembly.
  • The Laborers Quartet will sing at noon Sunday at West Dunbar Community Church, Dunbar.
  • The Doug Humphrey's Family will sing at the evening service on Sunday at Cathedral of Prayer Southern Baptist Church, 2326 Pennsylvania Ave.
  • Rhonda Pauley will be singing at the morning and during the afternoon homecoming services on Sunday at Leon Baptist Church.
