CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- With the gold-and-blue Capitol dome in the background, Sen. Hillary Clinton spoke to an enthusiastic audience at the University of Charleston Friday afternoon, urging West Virginia voters to elect Anne Barth to Congress.
"She is not on the side of George Bush, Dick Cheney and Republican ideologues who have gotten our country into so much trouble," the former first lady said.
Referring to lavish vacations now being enjoyed by corporate executives whose companies are collapsing, Clinton said Barth "spent her summers at church camps and in service projects helping people, not at resorts."
During her remarks, Clinton strongly urged voters to vote for the Obama-Biden ticket and Democrats for all other positions.
Clinton praised Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., who attended the event.
"There hasn't been anyone who has ever served a state with greater love and devotion," she said. "He has always led the way to improve the lives on West Virginians."
Clinton, D-N.Y., also urged an end to hostilities in Iraq.
"We want to bring troops home from Iraq. Her opponent [Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.] has voted with President Bush and Vice President Cheney 100 percent of the time to support the war in Iraq.
"Anne will also protect Social Security from privatization. And she opposed subsidies for Big Oil, while Capito voted to give $5.4 billion in tax breaks to oil companies.
"Republicans have run out of ideas," Clinton concluded. "We need new leadership of the kind Anne Barth offers. I am asking you not just to vote for her on Nov. 4, but to go out and work for her, too."
Barth began by telling her supporters, "Today, 80 percent of Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction. George Bush and Shelley Moore Capito support the way things are going. ...

"Each month, we spend $12 billion in Iraq. They are getting new roads, bridges and schools. Right here in West Virginia, we need new roads, bridges and schools.
"You can vote for change in this election. My campaign is about change. And I don't believe in saying one thing back home and voting the other way in Washington."
Barth promised to back stronger legislation for veterans.
"They deserve the health care, the benefits and the honor they have earned," she said. "And it is time to bring our brave men and women home from Iraq in a safe and responsible way."
Barth's campaign refuses to accept contributions from Big Oil companies and financial institutions currently being bailed out of the current economic collapse, including Washington Mutual, Citigroup and Countrywide Financial.
"My opponent has taken money from all of them," Barth said. "I will go to Washington to help Main Street, not Wall Street."
Barth also criticized Capito for voting against legislation to protect Social Security from privatization.
"Can you imagine what would be happening today if our Social Security money was strapped in the stock market?"
Barth, who worked for Byrd for 21 years before running for Congress, looked at him during the rally and said, "Thank you for the insight and guidance you have given me."

She has supported big oil and big corporations, and they've supported her.
There will be a Democrat in the White House and it will help if this state gets behind that Democrat and elects another team member to Congress.
If you support Hillary Clinton, and she says you should support Anne and Obama, then why shouldn't you?
On 1/18/07 she voted time after time to block efforts introduced by fellow West Virginian Nick Rahall to repeal a huge tax break that oil and gas firms had been getting since '04. In that series of votes, again, in lockstep with Bush's GOP, she clearly demonstrated their unwillingness to take up to $15 BILLION in revenues that tax break repeal would've produced and set the money aside for appropriations that should go towards developing clean renewable energy sources.
