EPA decision on coal plants could affect W.Va.

The Bush administration has offered no valid legal reason to not limit greenhouse gas emissions from new coal-fired power plants, a federal environmental appeals board ruled Thursday.

A three-judge Environmental Appeals Board panel rejected the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's refusal to require carbon dioxide control equipment on a new plant proposed in Utah.

But the ruling could have broad implications, and the judges suggested EPA consider dealing with the issue "in the context of an action of nationwide scope, rather than through this specific permitting proceeding."

"Building new coal plants without controlling their carbon emissions could wipe out all of the other efforts being taken by cities, states and communities across the country," said Bruce Nilles, director of the Sierra Club's National Coal Campaign, which challenged EPA's permit for Deseret Power's 110-megawatt Bonanza Plant along the Utah-Colorado border.

"Everyone has a role to play and it's time that the coal industry did its part and started living up to its clean coal rhetoric."

In West Virginia, the state Department of Environmental Protection approved the new Longview Power plant outside Morgantown without any carbon dioxide controls. And, the state Public Service Commission declined to require American Electric Power to include such controls in its plans for a new coal gasification plant proposed for Mason County.

Many climate scientists believe that the nation must swiftly cut carbon dioxide emissions, and ultimately reduce them by at least 80 percent below 2000 levels by mid-century to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.

For those believing, we can save the planet from global warming (the biggest sham since... who knows) is one nation (US) is to reduce CO2 emissions. It don't make sense, if global warming was it would be the leading news topic world wide each time we turned on the TV, radio, computer, or picked up a paper. I think there's more truth in plants needing this so called toxic CO2 to survive and emit oxygen, unless my 3rd grade science teacher lied to me. Does it look like we’re gripped in an uncommon heat wave due to global warming today? If we believe one single nation less than 10 % of the world’s population can save this planet from the damaging and deadly effects that burning coal has I ask you to try this experiment. Go to your electrical breaker box now and cut the power. Leave it off for at least 24 hours. Then as sit there freezing ask yourself do we further studies on the effects of global warming before we pass judgment upon this nation’s ample supply of energy.

Dog,

I sure hope you don't live near a coal or gas-fired plant.

What ever the decision is about nuclear plants I SURE DON'T WANT TO LIVE ANYWHERE NEAR ONE! It takes only ONE mishap to KILL hundreds of people! I would rather freeze, thanks.

The planet hasn't warmed any in the last 10 years. Folks, do not be confused by false information, Dr. Hansen (the NASA chief) isn't even a trained climatologist, he's wrong about global warming. Al Gore is a nice, misguided man who is wrong about global warming and the next 25 years will prove him wrong. By 2020, we'll be into a period of approximately 15 years where the global temperature will be cooling and at least 1/2 degree Celsius colder than the last 25 years, it could even be colder than that. The truly harsh winters will return and all of this talk of global warming will be fully replaced by the term "climate change" to deal with the new, cold reality.
