CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A man was stabbed and slashed at around 5:40 p.m. on Leon Sullivan Way in Charleston.

The incident took place near the men's shelter.

Police say Timothy Pearson will be charged with malicious wounding after stabbing Timothy Ward.

Ward and Pearson were in a short verbal altercation, then Pearson was walking down the block, screaming that Ward struck him in the face, said Charleston Police Sgt. Duke Jordan. Pearson then stabbed Ward several times, Jordan said.

Police quickly cordoned off the scene with yellow tape as paramedics treated the victim on the street.

Shortly before 6 p.m., paramedics lifted his stretcher into an ambulance and took him to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital.

A small folding knife was visible near the curb across the street from some of the victim's clothes, which had been removed while he received treatment.

I believe that the article is implying that the combatants were denizens of the shelter, and that it might have been written differently had fisticuffs erupted between the conductor and first violinist of the WVSO on the steps of the Clay Center, or had the maitre de at Soho's threw down with the sous chef.

Is it more sensational because it happened near a homeless shelter?

The stabbing occured down the street from the shelter, which is near the shelter but also near Soho's, Capitol Market, Ziebart, Fairfield Inn, and the Clay Center, but somehow those places didn't make the story.
