Metro 911 in Charleston reported 80 accidents countywide between 6 and 11 a.m. Thirty-five of the wrecks resulted in injuries.
Large numbers of accidents were reported in the Sissonville area and the St. Albans area. Metro 911 officials said there were 25 wrecks reported in Sissonville, 20 in Pinch, 12 in the St. Albans area and six in Clendenin.
A Charleston Police Department police cruiser flipped onto its top on Greenbrier Street and Baker's Fork just past 8 a.m., according to Metro dispatchers. Cpl. Nick Null was hurt in the crash and broke his wrist, said Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster.
Interstate 77 was shut down in both directions at about 7:45 a.m. because of multiple accidents. One southbound lane of Interstate 77 was reopened at 9 a.m. and all other lanes reopened by 11 a.m.
A five-vehicle pileup on Pennsylvania Avenue near the Shadyside Tunnel in St. Albans at about 7:15 a.m. led to the eventual closing of Shadyside Road.
Two wrecks were reported on Coal River Road and one on Strawberry Road in St. Albans within minutes. Coal River Road was later shut down in both directions.
Greenbrier Street in front of Capital High School also was shut down in both directions because of collisions.
Wrecks were reported on Interstate 64 - including one near Charleston just before 9 a.m. -two in Jefferson at about the same time and one on Interstate 79 near Clendenin just before 10 a.m. Accidents had been reported on Interstate 79 earlier in the morning.
A total of three wrecks were reported in South Charleston, three in Jefferson, three in East Bank, four in the Frame area and two in Charleston. Accidents also were reported in Elkview and Cedar Grove.
Numerous wrecks also were reported in neighboring counties, including Lincoln and Putnam. Authorities in Lincoln County reported a five-car crash and a three-car crash around 6:30 a.m. Jackson County officials reported eight accidents within 15 minutes, beginning about 7 a.m.
Putnam County authorities reported 20 wrecks Monday morning, including a car that went into Heizer Creek at about 9:30 a.m. The driver had left by the time emergency responders arrived.
