Six people were injured, several severely, when a van carrying special-needs passengers crashed on Interstate 77 in Jackson County Thursday morning, police said.
A ResCare Inc. nursing home van with four special-needs adults and two female employees was traveling northbound on the interstate near Kenna when the driver veered into the median, said Sgt. S.E. Wolfe of the West Virginia State Police.
According to witnesses, the driver then overcorrected and the van rolled several times and slid on the passenger side down the northbound lane, Wolfe said.
All six passengers were injured and three were airlifted to CAMC General. All passengers were stable as of late Thursday afternoon, Wolfe said.
No other vehicles were involved and police do not believe the roadway was a factor in the crash. Holiday traffic was backed up for more than an hour as emergency personnel worked at the crash site. Police still are investigating the wreck.
