HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Wreath making, Santa, ice skating and horse-drawn wagon rides are just a few activities the Putnam County Parks and Recreation Commission is offering area residents during the 7th annual Yuletide.
Throughout the week, the county will provide a variety of family-friendly activities for Putnam residents to enjoy close to home before the last-minute Christmas shopping begins, said Scott Williamson, director of the county parks convention.
The Parks Commission kicked off Yuletide on Friday with the park's holiday light display. The lights will remain on display until Jan. 1.
In addition, the county's synthetic ice-skating rink will extend its hours. The rink, located at Valley Park, will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. nightly. The rink will be open from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 2 to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
The cost to skate is $5 per person. Skate rentals are $3 and skate sharpening is $4.
The Parks Commission recently moved the synthetic ice rink from the tennis courts to under a picnic shelter in Valley Park. With the move, the commission added 17 additional panels, nearly doubling the size of the rink.
A heated sitting area for non-skaters and a vending area offering hot chocolate and food also were added.
"So Grandma and Grandpa do not have to sit on the sides and shiver," Williamson said.
The rink opened last year, but parks officials had to close it when the weather turned bad, Williamson said.
By enclosing the rink under an existing picnic shelter at the northeastern part of the park, residents can continue to skate in rain or snow.
"We also wanted to keep as much sunlight and direct cold off it. [With the move] we've eased our maintenance, plus it allowed us to make it bigger," he said. "We can get a few more people on the ice now."
The Yuletide schedule includes:
Monday: Area families can check out a train display and take in the movie "Polar Express" in the community center in Valley Park. Santa also will make an appearance. The center opens at 6 p.m. Tuesday: From 5 to 9 p.m. residents can take a wreath-making class. Registration is $15. Families also can take a ride in a horse-drawn wagon from 6 to 9 p.m. and roast marshmallows over a bonfire. Wednesday: The Parks Commission will host an open house in the one-room schoolhouse from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Eleanor Park. Later that evening Santa will visit the community center in Valley Park from 6 to 8 p.m. Wagon rides will also be available. Thursday: Residents can take in a Christmas-themed game of mini-golf at Valley Park from 6 to 9 p.m. There also will be a live nativity and wagon rides. Friday: Families can join the Parks Commission for a Colonial Christmas, bonfire, wagon rides and a visit from Santa from 6 to 9 p.m. at Valley Park. Saturday: Residents can get their dogs in the holiday spirit with the county's annual Reindog Parade from 10 a.m. to noon at Valley Park. Registration is $10 and all proceeds go toward the construction of a new Putnam County Animal Shelter. The Parks Commission also will hold a kids fun day from noon to 2 p.m. in the Valley Park Community Center. Dec. 12: The Parks Commission will host a Rock Around the Christmas Tree Dance from 6 to 9 p.m. at Valley Park Community Center. The dance is open to all residents and their families.
