Kanawha County sheriff's deputies are trying to piece together exactly what happened during a shooting Saturday night on Sissonville Drive.
According to a criminal complaint on file in Kanawha Magistrate Court, Deputies D.H. Duff and B.E. Hall arrived at a house on Sissonville Drive about 10 p.m. Saturday to respond to reports of a shooting. When they got there, Dale Thomas Newhouse, 51, of 3834 Sissonville Drive, came out of the house with a .22 caliber pistol in his hand.
Sheryl Summers, who owns the house, told deputies that Newhouse had been at the house drinking alcohol with her, Dawn Denise Withrow, 35, of Elkview, and two other people. After the other two people left, Summers said she and Withrow continued to drink with Newhouse.
According to the criminal complaint, Withrow was lying on a bed and Summers was sitting in a chair nearby when Newhouse started to remove his clothes and tried to remove Withrow's clothing.
Withrow protested, but Newhouse said he was going to have sex with Withrow, Summers told deputies.
Summers told deputies she then pulled a .22 caliber pistol out of her purse to try to stop Newhouse's advances. She and Newhouse struggled over the gun, and Newhouse eventually knocked it out of her hand, according to the criminal complaint.
Summers then pulled out a fishing knife. She told deputies Newhouse fired a single shot into the ceiling before Withrow stepped between Summers and Newhouse.
Summers told deputies Newhouse fired again, striking Withrow.
Withrow was taken to CAMC General Hospital. Detective S.D. Ferrell, who went to the hospital to try to talk to her after the shooting, said she suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper right side of her chest. According to the criminal complaint, the bullet entered her chest and exited her right armpit.
Newhouse was charged with malicious wounding. Lt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said the investigation is continuing.
