More than 220 sponsors contributed an estimated $800,000 to date to underwrite the costs of Gov. Joe Manchin's second inauguration, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - More than 220 sponsors contributed an estimated $800,000 to date to underwrite the costs of Gov. Joe Manchin's second inauguration, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Predominant among the list of sponsors are coal, natural gas and other energy companies; health care and pharmaceutical companies and physicians; lawyers and law firms; labor unions and gaming companies - large and small.
While the minimum requested contribution to be an inaugural sponsor was $2,500, inaugural committee spokeswoman Sara Payne Scarbro said some of the listed sponsors, particularly individuals, may have given less than that amount.
"We accepted contributions of up to $5,000," she said. "Some individuals might not have been able to give $2,500...but they wanted to show their appreciation and support."
In the solicitation for contributions, the inaugural committee offered two sponsorship levels.
Companies or individuals donating $2,500 received two reserved seats at the inauguration, two tickets to a sponsor appreciation reception Sunday evening at the Clay Center, two tickets to the inaugural ball, and two passes to a VIP hospitality suite at the Civic Center.
Donors at the $5,000 level received four tickets to each event and four passes to the hospitality suite.
Scarbro said a final report listing all inaugural contributions and expenditures will be filed with the secretary of state's office once all outstanding expenses are paid.
"Hopefully, that will be in a couple of weeks," she said.
In 2005, the inaugural committee raised more than $1.3 million, and ultimately transferred about $500,000 in surplus to help pay for renovations to the governor's mansion.
Among the 222 listed sponsors for the 2009 inauguration at least 27 are coal, natural gas or other energy companies. Among them: Arch Coal, Consol Energy, Dominion Resources, International Coal Group, Patriot Coal Corp., and Waco Oil and Gas. The Independent Oil and Gas Association of West Virginia and the West Virginia Coal Association also were sponsors.
In addition to calling for development of new energy technologies, Manchin in his inaugural address Monday pledged to seek affordable health care for all working West Virginians.
