CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Convicted Cross Lanes computer executive Martin Bowling was forced to resign from a previous job at the state Department of Health and Human Resources after agency officials discovered pornographic materials on his computer.

In 2004, Bowling complained that his computer wasn't working at optimal speed, leading the department's information technology employees to examine it.

They found a large cache of pornography, including videos, which take up a large amount of computer memory, according to DHHR employees.

At the time, Bowling was working as a programmer in the Bureau of Behavioral Health and Health Facilities office, hired through CDI Corp., a temporary agency that provides professional services.

"Our folks were trying to install some software to update it, and his computer just locked up," said John Law, a DHHR spokesman. "We did call the company, and they escorted Mr. Bowling out of the building, and we never saw him afterward."

Nonetheless, Bowling later touted his work at DHHR on his Web site, alleging he had "landed a contract," with the state agency.

Bowling, who worked at DHHR for only several months, also included mention of his work with the agency in biographical information he presented when speaking at Internet marketing conferences throughout the United States.

Oh lighten up sodbuster.
OF COURSE we all should want all the state employees, bureaucrats, inspectors, law authorities, tax officials, teachers, public health officials, education officials, vice squad members dressed as whores and junkies,DMV personnel, food stamp'n'welfare fraud investigators,CPS kidnappers, police informants, probation officers, road repair crews, state psychiatric hospital workers, and WORKFORCE WEST VIRGINIA COMPUTER WHIZZES to be'working'everyday with their uniforms, badges, guns and clipboards.

Free society needs all these people kept away from any distraction so they can do their precious'jobs'.

Ha!No,ideally,I still think we'd be better off if we rounded up the whole state crew and put'em on an aircraft carrier and told them to tax and regulate and inspect and educate and arrest and license themselves to their hearts content. When they get hungry and cold, they can come back to shore and join a free society.

Barring that modest plan, give'em porn ALL DAY LONG!

Well skepdoc I would also point out that if you spend your "on the clock" time using the computer for personal stuff like this then it is depriving your employer his due.

(Does not matter if the employer is public or private.)

And if I were the employer I would be more concerned with how much time they spent, not whether it was watching porn or just chatting on the Charleston Gazette.

Captainjoe and Wv state, you are correct and I apologize for that
insensitive and overly broad remark. I was merely remarking on
those IT folk I have worked with and obviously didn't consider
my remarks very well.

sodbuster,

You've hit on something there : it'd be better for our nominally free society if the state employees ALL just ignored their assigned tasks and played poker and watched porn on their office computers. And if there are any bureaucrats who don't have a computer to chat with friends'n'family and the like --GET 'EM ONE !!
