CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sen. Robert C. Byrd is not expected to return to Capitol Hill this week as he continues to recover from a staph infection, according to a statement from his office.
Byrd entered the hospital on May 15. His staff has not disclosed where he is or provided any details about his condition.
Monday's statement says Byrd "very much appreciates all the well wishes he has received from his colleagues on Capitol Hill, his fellow West Virginians," and others across the country. The statement singled out a handmade card from the outgoing Senate Page class and a note from Sen. Edward Kennedy, who is fighting a brain tumor.
Byrd, 91, is the longest-serving senator in United States history.
