Crash kills Roane woman, grandson

SPENCER, W.Va. -- A 57-year-old woman and her 4-year-old grandson were killed in an accident in Roane County Tuesday morning, according to the West Virginia State Police.

Kathy Saunders, of Reedy, was driving her 2006 Toyota Camry on Rt. 33 around 9:30 a.m. when she collided with a truck carrying heavy machinery. Saunders and her grandson died immediately.

Saunders' 8-year-old grandson was sitting in the passenger seat during the accident and was taken to the CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He is reportedly in stable condition, said Sgt. B.S. Snodgrass with the West Virginia State Police.

The driver of the truck was uninjured.

The accident left the intersection of Rt. 33 and Reedyville Road closed until about 7 p.m. Tuesday night, the State Police reported.

The accident is still under investigation.
