Two killed in Braxton County crash on I-79

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A four-car accident on Interstate 79 just north of Burnsville left two people dead on Wednesday.

West Virginia State Police Trooper J.T. Drake said a female driver ran into the median around 5:30 p.m. and flipped her car, hitting three others traveling in the northbound lanes. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car closest to the median in the northbound fast lane was struck first, he said. The driver was killed by the impact.

Another driver in the fast lane was injured and taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown via helicopter, he said. All three cars sustained major damage, and the driver in the northbound slow lane sustained minor injuries.

Police do not suspect alcohol was involved, but they believe the southbound driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Northbound lanes on I-79 were shut down for about an hour and southbound lanes were closed for about 30 minutes, Drake said.

The names of those involved in the accident were not available Wednesday night.

My children and I passed this accident just minutes after it happened. If anyone survived through this one, God was looking after them. I was horrible, the worst thing that I have ever saw. It made me nausea. Just want the families to know that our prayers and thoughts are with them.

What I don't understand is why construction on the rest area just north of where this accident occurred is taking so long to complete. Seems like they've been working on it forever, and when I drive by I don't usually see much activity.

What a tragedy, and rest areas on Interstates are being closed, where tired drivers can take a nap when they begin to feel sleepy. Make up our minds. Do we want long distance drivers to use the Interstates, or do we want to save a few dollars by closing rest areas?
