C8 linked to high cholesterol in children

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Children with more of the toxic chemical C8 in their blood are more likely to have high cholesterol, according to a new scientific study filed Friday in Wood Circuit Court.

The study, conducted by West Virginia University researchers, found higher levels of C8 "were significantly associated with higher cholesterol and LDL, or so-called "bad cholesterol," according to a summary filed by lawyers for DuPont Co. and Wood County residents.

Lawyers for both sides in a now-settled class-action suit over DuPont's C8 pollution filed the study in circuit court after it was provided to them by members of a three-person science panel studying the chemical's effects as part of that legal settlement.

Previously, the C8 Science Panel had issued a report that tied C8 exposure to high cholesterol in adults, and other studies have linked high levels of exposure to increased cholesterol among exposed chemical plant workers.

This latest study on C8 exposure and cholesterol in children was filed in court, but had not been posted on the Science Panel's Web site or otherwise publicized by the panel, at least as of late Friday afternoon.

C8 is another name for perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA. It is one of a family of perfluorinated chemicals, or PFCs. The other best-known PFC is PFOS. In West Virginia, DuPont had used C8 since the 1950s at its Washington Works plant south of Parkersburg. C8 is a processing agent used to make Teflon and other nonstick and stain-resistant products.

Around the world, researchers are finding that people have C8 and other PFCs in their blood at low levels. People can be exposed by drinking contaminated water, eating tainted food or through food packaging and stain-proof agents on furniture or carpet.

Evidence is mounting about the chemical's dangers, but regulators have yet to yet a binding federal limit for emissions or human exposure.

lilarose,

You have brought out several very illuminating points.

The advocates and allies of DuPont Management have been nothing less than viciously vindictive and vengeful in initiating personal attacks and smears on independently-speaking writers over the internet to impugn their credibility and suppress their opinions and data on this insidiously toxic Teflon chemical!

If PFOA or C8 is as perfectly SAFE and "humanly harmless" as DuPont's dissembling bosses and their incentive compensation-conflicted "scientists" and PR con artists insist, why is there a global phase-out going on, country by country?! ...funfun..

Unbelievable. No, I take that back, it is believable. Despite recent studies like this, DuPont is lobbying the EPA to increase the acceptable level of PFOA in our water supplies. DuPont repeatedly quotes older pre-2005 flawed studies to prove PFOA is safe. However, in 2006 the EPA Scientific Advisory panels recommended more peer-reviewed studies and a label of carcinogenic. Numerous additional new studies have also proven it to be toxic. Still, DuPont quotes the old research and attempts to discredit anything negative said about Teflon on any website, blog, or product review. Very similar to what the plastic industry did when alarm bells were first sounded about BPA. I can only hope consumers continue to pressure the EPA to ban PFOA production and refuse to purchase Teflon.

In the meantime, the children living in the City of Parkersburg accumulate this toxic industrial chemical PFOA or C8 little by little inside their growing bodies every time they take a drink of water from their home taps or swallow some bath water!

Some of the local politicians and DuPont Management pretend nothing is amiss, nothing to do.

For years, DuPont's devious bosses and their PR flim-flam artists have been insisting that their extraordinarily toxic Teflon chemical PFOA or C8, a likely human carcinogen, and known animal carcinogen, is...well,... perfectly SAFE, as fresh and harmless as the driven snow. With consummate arrogance they demand we buy their advertisement of C8 as having "no human health effects", "no risk"!

If the linkage of higher C8 exposure and accumulation of C8 in the bodies of unsuspecting children with higher LDL cholesterol levels is not a harmful human health effect with its concomitant potential danger of eventual heart disease and stroke, I don't know what is!

The DuPont toxic Teflon chemical scandal continues to grow!
