W.Va. natural gas prices go down, then up
Advertiser

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Natural gas customers around the state will see their bills drop by 25 to 40 percent from last year, but for many, those savings will be short-lived.

Byron Harris, the state Public Service Commission's consumer advocate, says prices charged by the state's major providers for their costs to buy natural gas dropped on Nov. 1.

But the state's largest and second-largest providers of natural gas, Mountaineer Gas and Dominion Hope, have both asked for permission to increase their base rates to cover wages, equipment and other costs.

Harris says that even with the base rate increases, customers will still see significant savings compared to last year, when the average monthly bill was roughly $215.

I installed a wood stove in my house and I put cellulose insulation in my exterior walls. This has made a heck of a difference in my gas usage. Infact when I called the gas company in Feb. to dispute an "estimated" bill the woman asked if we had moved out because the usage was so low as compared to the previous year!

I just bought an outdoor woodstove to heat my home and my hot water, I love it, and I feel like I'm sticking it to all the utility companies. My first bill since hooking it up was half of what it normally is, poor ol AEP, I don't how they are going to make it...

Outrageous. First, we are paying to much for the gas itself. Second, we pay a ridiculous $8 a month for the priviledge of Mountaineer sending us a bill. And now this. With Verizon leaving the state. Mountaineer gas has taken over the mantle of worst utility.

Yes, PCS is going to stick it to us again. If the gas companys cannot afford to stay in business, maybe they should downsize or take an economics class and learn how to budget their money. We are still in Bush's deep recession and people can barely afford to buy food. How does PCS think the people can afford to pay those huge rate increases?
