Marshall provost, professor to appear before grand jury

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall University's chief academic officer and a professor will appear before a federal grand jury following a grade-change controversy involving state Treasurer John Perdue's daughter.

Marshall said in a statement that Provost Gayle Ormiston was subpoenaed Thursday.

Laura Wyant, a professor in the College of Education and Human Services, also received a subpoena Thursday. Wyant said she was asked to bring before the grand jury all records in her possession related to Emily Perdue.

Emily Perdue took two courses with Wyant this spring. Perdue received incomplete grades from Wyant, but Ormiston has said Perdue completed the coursework over the summer.

Marshall said it is confident that there was no inappropriate action.

If I were the kid of one of our states politicians I would go out of state to college. Even if you were a perfect student, the microscope that your parents enemies would put you under would not be worth it.

So what law was broken? Even if favoritism was shown, you have to show some bribery or coercion for it to be a crime. Since her father has no authority over Marshall University or its budget, there's no way he could coerce a better grade for his daughter. So where's the crime?

Marshall receives federal money. The federal government can investigate and potentially prosecute ANYTHING that gets money from good ol' Uncle Sugar.

This makes absolutely no sense. Federal grand juries investigate federal crimes. Someone tell me what the federal crime would be even if they did change the girl's grades. I'd like to see that statute. Somebody's being investigated for something and I'm guessing it's not because of a dispute over whether the Purdue girl actually earned a grade or not. Maybe it's bribery, or extortion involving a public official.
