BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Bluefield Regional Medical Center's Board of Directors has agreed to sell the facility to a subsidiary of Tennessee-based Community Health Systems Inc.

Board members approved a non-binding letter of intent for the sale this week. Details of the proposed sale weren't released.

Board Chairman R.E. "Bob'' Perkinson Jr. says the deal would enable the hospital to maintain health care in the area.

The hospital says it's in negotiations with Community Health Systems. The sale will require a certificate of need from state regulators.

Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems owns, operates or leases 122 hospitals in 29 states.
