Sen. Byrd to attend miners' memorial service

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., plans to attend Sunday's memorial service for the 29 miners who died at Upper Big Branch Mine.
Byrd plans to meet the family members of the miners before the 3:30 p.m. service to offer his prayers for them, Byrd spokesman Mark Ferrell said Saturday. The senator does not plan to speak at the memorial service, which will take place at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
The official speakers will include: President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, Rep. Nick J. Rahall and Gov. Joe Manchin.
In recent days, Byrd has been vocal in demanding more effective enforcement of federal and state mine safety laws to prevent future disasters.
