CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- On May 1, six more semifinalists were selected in the fourth and final preliminary round of "Charleston's Teen Idol" held at Charleston Town Center Mall. They are (from left) Colton Pack, 15, of Danese; Brittany Smith, 21, of Charleston; Hannah George, 14, of Charleston; John Loudermilk, 21, of South Charleston, Kyra Walker, 13, of St. Albans and Katelin Calvin, 21, of Charleston.
They will join 16 other semifinalists in Saturday's final competition, which begins at 1 p.m. in Macy's Court.
First, all 22 singers will perform their chosen song. Then, the judges will deliberate, choose five finalists, and those finalists will sing the second song they have selected. The preliminary rounds were all a capella, but today, the singers may have accompaniment or a backing track.
Last year's winner, Ann Sumpter, will also perform at the event.
The other semifinalists are Autumn Blair, 14, of Chloe; Chris Carter, 14, of South Charleston; Brandon Green, 18, of Chelyan; Kaitlyn Hansroth, 17, of Charleston; Taylor Henderson, 16, of Hurricane; Paige Isaacs, 13, of Charleston; Taylor Isaacs, 13, of Scott Depot; Slater Jarrell, 15, of Cross Lanes; Emily Kinner, 14, of Huntington; Lindsay Paul, 17, of South Charleston; Sean Price, 18, of Madison; Sabriyah Shahbandy, 13, of Charleston; Laura Summerhill, 19, of Belle; Austin Thomas, 17, of South Charleston; Andre Williams, 16, of Leslie and Cody Wilson, 13, of South Charleston.
The field was chosen from a total of 65 competitors, all ages 13 to 23.
Today's competition will be hosted by T.J. King of Electric 102.7. Judges are local musicians Julie Adams, Steve Payne, Mark Scarpelli and Ron Sowell and radio disc jockey "Super Duper" Charlie Cooper.
The contest winner receives a prize package including a trip to Nashville to record a two-song demo with a professional backing band. He or she will also perform during FestivALL.
In addition to the grand-prize winner, a crowd favorite will be chosen.
