Two Oak Hill men are in the hospital after a coal truck crossed the center line and collided head-on with their vehicle.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two Oak Hill men are in the hospital after a coal truck crossed the center line and collided head-on with their vehicle.
Justin A. Davis, 19 and Adam Sizemore, 19, were driving on W.Va. 61 near Beards Fork at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when a coal truck crossed the center line and crashed into their Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.
Davis, the driver, was ejected from the vehicle, according to police. Sizemore was also injured in the collision. HealthNet flew both men to Charleston Area Medical Center, where Davis was in critical condition and Sizemore was in stable condition.
Larry W. Evans, 26, was driving the coal truck and was not injured in the crash. Sheriff's deputies believe Evans was distracted and crossed the center line.
No charges have been filed against Evans, but Sheriff Steve W. Kessler urged drivers to focus on the road and avoid distractions.
"Over the past several years there has been a great deal of discussion about the dangers of distracted driving," Kessler said. "Legislative proposals have been advanced to prohibit the use of cellular phones while driving. Although the use of a cell phone was not a factor in this collision, this accident illustrates the dangers of distracted driving.
"If you takes your attention off the road for even an instant, the results can be tragic," he said.
The accident remains under investigation by Deputy P.J. Pack.
