Residents going on 'Night Out' against crime in Charleston
Advertiser

CHARLESTON, W.Va. --  Charleston residents will gather next week to tell crime to take a hike during the 27th annual National Night Out Against Crime.

The Tuesday event, which is being held for the 24th time in the city, will feature events across Charleston that encourage residents to be active in their neighborhoods.

Concerned neighbors will join with the Charleston Police Department, local firefighters, ambulance and rescue personnel and city officials to raise awareness of public safety and become part of the national crime prevention and safety awareness movement.

The block party atmosphere of the events will include cookouts, walking tours of neighborhoods, children's activities and numerous appearances by city police.

The seven events will take place on the West Side, East End and in Kanawha City and South Hills. Residents not living close to the scheduled events are encouraged to lock their doors, leave a porch light on and stroll with their neighbors to get to know each other and share ideas on combating crime.

"We can strengthen the bonds between neighbors and make new friends as we work together on mutual concerns," said CPD Community Services Director Lt. Valerie Strege.

The tentative schedule is as follows:

  • Glenwood School, corner of Glenwood and Grant Streets, 5:30-7:30 p.m.: The block party is sponsored by the West Side Neighborhood Association and combines three West Side Neighborhood Watch groups. Popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers and fixings, along with an inflatable "jumper" for kids will be at the event. Police, firefighters, city officials and neighborhood watch association members will attend the event. National sponsor Target Inc. will have sidewalk chalk for the kids. From 5 to 8 p.m., Grant Street between Lovell Drive and Glenwood Avenue will be closed for the event.
  •

  • Orchard Manor and Little Page Terrace, 6-7 p.m.: The event is being co-hosted by Virginia Nesmith and Dave Wagner at the Switzer Center entrance. Participants can look forward to basketball games, music, book giveaways and appearances by city officials, fire trucks, CPD patrol cars, members of the K-9 unit and bike officers. Target will provide sidewalk chalk for the kids.
