St. Albans man charged in sheriff associations scheme
ST. ALBANS, W.Va. -- Kanawha County sheriff's deputies have charged a 29-year-old St. Albans man with obtaining money under false pretenses after he allegedly claimed he was raising funds for sheriff associations in Kanawha, Putnam and Cabell counties.
Michael Anthony McDonald, 29, faces a similar charge in Putnam County. He was being held in Western Regional Jail on Thursday.
Deputies obtained a search warrant for McDonald's residence and "recovered numerous documents and paperwork related to this scam," according to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.
McDonald allegedly used false information to obtain and solicit money from the Rite-Aid in Nitro, after he claimed to represent a fundraising organization, deputies said in a news release.
McDonald claimed he was raising money for the three sheriff associations and other FOP associations, according to the release. He's allegedly tried the scam in other counties.
Kanawha deputies are working with out-of-county investigators to track down information about more cases. Also, deputies suspect a second man was helping McDonald, according to the release.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Kanawha sheriff's office at 304-357-0169. Cpl. P.J. Lively and Cpl. B.E. Hall are investigating.
