CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A South Charleston man admitted in federal court Friday that he tried to obstruct a deputy U.S. Marshal when the marshals came to his apartment to arrest a friend, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

Ronald King, 32, faces up to a year in prison when sentenced by U.S. District Judge John T. Copenhaver Jr. on Nov. 30.

In April, marshals were looking for Jeremy Kiser, who had failed to appear in federal court, when they spotted his car outside King's Cross Lanes apartment, a news release states. Posing as a pizza deliveryman, a deputy marshal knocked on the door.

When King answered the door, the marshal identified himself and ordered King to show his hands, but King slammed the door shut on the marshal's foot and yelled to Kiser to run, according to the release. Both King and Kiser were arrested after the marshals entered the apartment.

In a separate case, a North Carolina man was sentenced Thursday to seven years in prison for possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine.

Marquis Anthony Nelson, 31, of Greensboro, pleaded guilty to the charge in April, according to the release.

West Virginia State Police found more than two grams of crack, $470, a loaded semi-automatic pistol and a 14-inch sword hidden in a cane when they arrested Nelson in Welch on a fugitive warrant from North Carolina on March 3, 2008, the release states.

Nelson was wanted for murder at the time. He subsequently pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in North Carolina and was sentenced to up to 159 months in prison.

U.S. District Judge Irene C. Berger sentenced Nelson on the drug charge.

Also on Thursday, a Cool Ridge man was sentenced to 77 months in prison for distributing marijuana.

Christopher Lee White, 38, admitted that he sold more than 26 grams of marijuana to a person cooperating with the state police on Sept. 10, 2009, the release states. Because of prior drug convictions, Berger sentenced White as a career offender.
