NITRO, W.Va. -- Nitro City Council members voted Tuesday to award the contract for the city's comprehensive plan and streetscape design to Michael Baker Jr. Inc. of Charleston, after council members and city officials heard presentations from nine different firms over the past few weeks.
The comprehensive plan is an outline mapping the next 20 years of the city's potential growth, from public park trails down to sewer system enhancements, Councilman Dave Casebolt said. He said the master enhancement plan refers to details like the designs of street signs and crosswalks within the city.
According to Casebolt, the prices agreed upon for the comprehensive and master enhancement plans of $125,000 and $95,000 respectively, are based upon whether Nitro receives federal grants to proceed. He said the city should know by council's Sept. 21 meeting whether it is still in consideration for those grants.
If Nitro doesn't get the grants, the price will have to be renegotiated with the Baker firm, Casebolt said.
In other business, council members voted to pay for postage and boxes for supplies to be sent to orphans in Iraq.
Brad Morgan, a veteran from St. Albans, described how supplies of clothing, school supplies and other necessities will be gathered and sent to a group of medics and soldiers out of Parkersburg in Iraq.
Mayor Rusty Casto suggested that the city pay for flat-rate boxes and postage for all the donated items.
Morgan warned that anyone wishing to donate clothing should refrain from any items endorsing the U.S. or any sports teams or colleges. Anyone who wishes to donate items can call the Nitro city office at 304-755-0705 for details.
