CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Cross Lanes man is in jail after allegedly attacking his girlfriend and friends who came to her aid with a wooden chair leg.

Kenneth Paul Gallaspie, 28, allegedly got drunk Wednesday and got into a fight with his girlfriend, Emily Beth Carter, 27, at the couple's home on Walnut Valley Drive in Cross Lanes, according to Lt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies were called to the home at about 7:50 p.m., where they discovered Carter with a softball-sized lump on her forehead, Crosier said. Carter told deputies Gallaspie had hit her with his fists and a wooden chair leg.

Carter's sister, Melody Carter, 34, and another friend, Lisa Marteny, 39, who were at the house and tried to help Emily Carter ward off Gallaspie, were also attacked, Crosier said. Crosier said Gallaspie allegedly hit Marteny in the head with a chair leg, splitting open her forehead.

Gallaspie also fought with deputies who arrived to break up the fight, Crosier said. Deputies were forced to fire a Taser gun at Gallaspie to subdue him.

Emily Carter and Lisa Marteny were both taken to local hospitals, Crosier said. Gallaspie was charged with two counts of malicious wounding, one count of battery and one count of obstructing an officer.

Gallaspie was in the South Central Regional Jail this morning awaiting arraignment.
