SUMMERSVILLE -- A Nicholas County man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly trying to break into a buried coffin.
Nicholas County sheriff's deputies allegedly found John B. Strader, 36, of Canvas, trying to break into the coffin of Eloise Garrett in the Garrett Cemetery in Fenwick. The incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, according a criminal complaint on file in Nicholas County Magistrate Court and a press release issued by Nicholas County Sheriff Wetzel Bennett.
According to the complaint, Strader was found with a shovel in hand, having already uncovered Garrett's vault. He was trying to get into the vault when deputies arrived, the complaint said.
Strader refused several commands to drop the shovel before being shot with a Taser gun and subdued, according to the criminal complaint.
Strader was charged with obstructing an officer and trying to dig up a grave. He was in the Central Regional Jail on Wednesday in lieu of $6,000 bond.
It was unclear whether Strader knew Garrett. The sheriff could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.
