MOUNT HOPE, W.Va. -- An Ohio man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly trying to break into the home of a Fayette County sheriff's deputy.
MOUNT HOPE, W.Va. -- An Ohio man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly trying to break into the home of a Fayette County sheriff's deputy.
Deputy W.K. Willis was at his home in Mount Hope at about 9:30 p.m. when he heard someone trying to get into the house, said Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler. When he went to the door, a man tried to force his way into the house, Kessler said.
Willis identified himself as a sheriff's deputy and arrested Jermaine Charles Lawrence, 32, of Columbus, Ohio. The sheriff said Willis found a large amount of cocaine and marijuana and a "substantial" amount of cash on Lawrence.
"This individual is believed to be linked to street gang activity and drug trafficking offenses in Columbus, Ohio," Kessler said. "It is believed at this time that the suspect was going to a residence in Mount Hope to sell drugs and went to Deputy Willis' residence by mistake.
"This is not the first time that Mr. Lawrence has been encountered in Fayette County, but he definitely chose the wrong residence to visit last night."
Lawrence was charged with nighttime burglary and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. He was in the Southern Regional Jail Thursday in lieu of $20,000 bail.
