CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A couple hundred people took up the invitation to "Join Me on the Bridge," as the South Side Bridge filled with brightly colored dancers, matched with waving flags, music, percussion and encouragement Tuesday afternoon.

The event was matched by similar events on bridges around the world to mark International Women's Day. Inspired by a meeting of women on a bridge between Congo and Rwanda, the event highlights the violence women and children suffer in conflict zones and the economic inequality woman worldwide face in wages, education and health care.
