This is just one of the more than 200 barns Whitley has photographed for her book chronicling farming history in Summers County. She returned to West Virginia in early March to photograph this barn in the Lane area of the county.

Photographer Phyllis Whitley sets her sights on a small old barn that is still used to store hay. The Summers County native has tried to capture barns across all four seasons for her upcoming historical book.

Retired Verizon employee Phyllis Whitley has embraced her new identity as The Barn Lady, chronicler of farming history in Summers County. Her upcoming book, "Barns of Summers County: West Virginia Heritage," will use numerous pictures of barns to tell tales about that history.
