Timeline: March on Blair Mountain in 1921

 Aug. 20: Union coal miners begin gathering in Marmet.

Aug. 24: Miners begin their March on Blair Mountain.

Aug. 25: Logan County Sheriff Don Chafin brings armed deputies and guards to the top of Blair Mountain. Gov. Ephraim Morgan asks President Warren Harding to send federal troops.

Aug. 26-27: Many miners go back home, but some continue to Blair Mountain. West Virginia State Police troopers kill two miners and wound two others.

Aug. 30 and 31: Armed miners begin their major assault. Heavy fighting breaks out across Blair Mountain Ridge.

Sept. 1: Union miners reach their high-water mark, but police forces push them back, especially after a bombing run by government biplanes.

Sept 2-3: Heavy fighting continues, but as more federal troops and planes arrive, 600 miners surrender.

Sept. 4: Miners and local police and coal company guards return home.
