CLAY, W.Va. -- A Clay County man was injured Sunday night when he crashed his ultralight aircraft while attempting to land.

Elvis Dawson, 53, of Ivydale, was coming in to land about 9:30 p.m. Sunday when he apparently hit a tree in Tanner School Hollow near Nebo, according to Sgt. K.D. Horrocks of the Clay detachment of the West Virginia State Police. Horrocks said Dawson apparently didn't have much flight experience in the small, single-person aircraft.

Horrocks said Dawson fell about 50 feet to the ground, but was taken by helicopter to CAMC General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"He got lucky," Horrocks said.

It is not necessary to have a pilot's license to fly an ultralight aircraft. The craft fall under few regulations in the United States.
