Lewis County man indicted on murder charge in baby death

WESTON, W.Va. -- A Lewis County grand jury has indicted a 23-year-old Hepzibah man on a first-degree murder charge in the death of his girlfriend's baby.

The InterMountain says Christopher Sheppard will be arraigned Thursday. He's been held without bond at Central Regional Jail since his arrest after the Feb. 22 death.

The 14-month old boy died of brain trauma. He also had five still-healing ribs, bruises on his ear area and torso, and mouth injuries.

Prosecutors say Sheppard was babysitting at a Jane Lew apartment and left the child unattended during a bath. The child fell out of the sink and landed on his head.

Investigators say Sheppard did nothing until the mother returned home. She tried to wake the baby using a washcloth and frozen juice can before calling 911.
