CHARLESTON, W.Va. --Two organizations have honored Phil McClung of West Virginia University at Parkersburg as the 2011 West Virginia Professor of the Year.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education selected McClung from nearly 300 top professors in the United States.

McClung teaches courses in psychology, human development and personality theories, to name a few. He has been a member of WVU Parkersburg's social sciences division since 1990.

"It is quite an honor to receive this award," he said in a statement. "It reflects on the outstanding students I've had through the years."

In 2007 and 2008, he was named a runner-up for the West Virginia Professor of the Year annual award that's sponsored by the Faculty Merit Foundation of West Virginia.

Last year, he received the 2010 Wayne Weiten Teaching Excellence Award, a national honor given by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology to the best psychology professor at one of the country's community colleges.

"We are honored to have Phil as a member of our faculty," said Dr. Rhonda Tracy, senior vice president for academic affairs. "His long and outstanding career at the college has been consistently punctuated with exceptional performance."

The U.S. Professors of the Year program recognizes the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country. It is recognized as one of the most prestigious awards honoring undergraduate teaching. The Carnegie Foundation and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education have been partners in offering the awards program since 1981.

This year, 27 educators in West Virginia won awards.
