Dec. 15 Twitter scholarship contest celebrates 1st Amendment

On Dec. 15, high school and college students can potentially put a chunk of change in their college fund by doing something they're probably already doing: tweeting. To mark the 220th anniversary of the ratification of the First Amendment, the American Society of News Editors will award scholarships worth $5,000 to 22 lucky Twitter users between the ages of 14 and 22.

All you've got to do to enter is tweet your support for the First Amendment with the hashtag #freetotweet between midnight and 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 15. It's that easy!

Don't tweet? Don't worry. You can still participate via email. Simply send your message to freetotweet@1forAll.us with the subject line "Free to Tweet Contest Entry."

Entries can include any original form of expression (Twitpic, online essay, webpage, YouTube video, etc.) that can be accessed through a link embedded in a tweet or email. Multiple entries are allowed, but each one must be unique. No spamming allowed!

Once all entries have been collected, a judging panel will select 50 finalists based equally on two criteria: the quality of the First Amendment message, including an understanding of the amendment's principles, and the presentation of the message, which includes originality, creativity and clarity.

After that, another panel will use the same criteria to choose the winners, who will then be notified by a Twitter direct message or email.
