CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- As part of FedEx's nationwide effort to increase its daily package volume capacity, FedEx Ground is building a new distribution center in Cross Lanes.
The 57,000-square-foot facility will be located on J.W. Drive, according to David Westrick, corporate spokesman for FedEx Ground.
The distribution center is an expansion from the current 30,000-square-foot station, 125 Lakeview Drive.
"It will be larger than an existing station now serving the area, allowing us to continue to meet and exceed customer demands in the region," Westrick said.
While Westrick couldn't say how many jobs the distribution center would bring to the area, he said "we will add jobs as necessary to support increased demand for package pickup and delivery service in the area."
"It is great news. There's another proof that infrastructure and working with business works for Kanawha County," said County Commission President Kent Carper.
Since 2005, the company has opened 11 hubs nationwide featuring advanced material-handling systems and expanded or relocated more than 500 local facilities, Westrick said.
"The network enhancements have resulted in accelerating ground service delivery by one day or more in more than half of the United States. FedEx Ground delivers more than 61 percent of packages in two days or less and more than 82 percent of packages in three days," Westrick said in an email.
