Bluefield working to make stadium ADA-compliant
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Bluefield is facing a September deadline to bring a city-owned stadium into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The original deadline was April. City attorney Brian Cochran tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the U.S. Department of Justice agreed to extend it.
The Department of Justice ordered the city to upgrade the 10,000-seat Mitchell Stadium to meet the federal law's requirements following an investigation prompted by a citizen's complaint several years ago.
Cochran says the stadium needs handicap-accessible ramps and seats. Bathroom fixtures also must be added.
Mitchell Stadium was built in 1935 by the federal Works Progress Administration.
