GOP lawmaker says 75-plus Dems are communists

WASHINGTON -- Republican Rep. Allen West said he believes 75-plus House Democrats are members of the Communist Party, a claim that echoed Joe McCarthy's unsubstantiated 1950s charges that communists had infiltrated the top ranks of the U.S. government.

Addressing a town-hall meeting Tuesday in Florida, the freshman lawmaker was asked how many members of the American legislature are "card-carrying Marxists.'' West said "there's about 78 to 81 members of the Democratic Party that are members of the Communist Party.'' He did not provide names.

West's office said Wednesday that the congressman stood by the comments and was referring to the 76 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the largest group within the House Democratic caucus.

I would say the 78 to 81 estimate is a very low.

I am embarassed and ashamed that a fellow Republican would stoop to such deliberate misrepresentation and distortion. It is a sign of how extremist and out of touch some of these have become. They are just plain going too far, and they refuse to apologize for it.

The sad thing is that if other Republican congressmen were asked whether or not they believed this outrageous claim, they would agree just to keep from upsetting all the extremists that make up the bulk of the Republcian party these days.

a claim that echoed Joe McCarthy's unsubstantiated 1950s charges...

Unsubstantiated until the 1990's when government documents released proved that McCarthy was right and that high ranking members of the Democratic Party did in fact support the communist party.

Really though, is that a surprise to anyone given that the progressive liberal movement of the New Deal was based on the same philosophies of Italian fascism and German Socialism? Perhaps that is why FDR called Benito Mussolini the European Genius and why Adolph Hitler sent a letter congratulating FDR on not only his Presidential victory in 1932 but continued to praise his policies throughout the 1930's.

One common theme shared by Hitler, Mussolini and FDR was their disdain for the so called fat cats that included bankers, a topic BO reiterated in 2009 when he stated "he did not run for office to be helping out a bunch of fat cat bankers on Wall Street."

You may not like it but West is right.

why is that a bad thing? the middle and lower class are what needs help, not the rich. what if he said he did run for office to help out a bunch of "fat cat bankers?"

That being the case then why is it that the Democratic Party is primarily responsible for bailing out Wall Street in 2008 and for giving them TARP in 2009?

Griner is about right. If Barack Obama would have spent one % of the time over the last three years governing this country that he spends campaigning for reelection there is chance that he would not be the worst president that we have had. Reaching out to the communists in the house is what has mad him so terrible.

When I was in the military some years back, one of the things that was taught was the method of communism taking over a country. The three main things was 1) Destroying religion and making it harder to worship...(Done)They want to take prayer out of schools and public events, forgetting that this country was based on religious freedom. 2) Taking control of the children away from the parents...(Done). The government wants to feed kids at school and have taken discipline away from the parents. Were are taxed to the point that both parents are forced to work to maintain a decent standard of living while so much of the taxes are sent overseas 3)Destruction of the economy...(Done). Unemployment is at a high point and if you have a job the taxes eat you up. And then the government wants to take away your rights and shove legislation down your throats that the people don't want. This all done by the Democratic rule.

I think you need to Google some of the old cartoons of how a bill becomes a law. If you understood that, perhaps you would understand why Democrats are responsible for the bailout of Wall Street and the subsequent TARP legislation. If you are able to somehow educate yourself on the above then perhaps you will understand what that has to do with Barrack Obama.

McCarthy was a drunk and maybe we will find with time that Congressman West might likewise be an elbow-bender. At least, that might be some excuse for this type of behavior.

I think a lot of people get bent out of shape when one is accused of being a communist when the truth is, the person getting bent out of shape doesn't even know what a communist is or what they stand for. Below are the first 5 of the 10 pillars of communism with personal thoughts.

1.Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
2.A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
3.Abolition of all right of inheritance.
4.Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5.Centralisation of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.

6.Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
7.Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
8.Equal liability of all to labour. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9.Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equitable distribution of the population over the country.
10.Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labour in its present form and combination of education with industrial production.

    ---

So the question is, how close are we as a nation to completion of the list and how many in the Democratic (and even some in the Republican Party) want to see us there?

I am with Great American and NPanhandle here - there is some serious crazy and paranoia to be found in these comments sections.

Perhaps AaronS can explain the similarity of the 10 planks of Communism to our system of Federal Govt? I am with you on the free education for children...perhaps that makes me a Commie?....lost on just about everything else. Unless AaronS is trying to make the statement that the United States economy bears little resemblance to a Communist economy. It is hard to decipher.
