Utility warns ATV riders to avoid W.Va. landfill
NEW HAVEN, W.Va. -- Appalachian Power Co. is warning people who are illegally riding their all-terrain vehicles at the Mountaineer Plant landfill in Mason County.
Plant manager Charlie Powell tells the Point Pleasant Register that the company intends to identify and pursue the prosecution of trespassers. The warning follows recent ATV riders entering the site to hunt or ride without permission.
Powell says that the utility is primarily concerned about public safety at the landfill, where heavy equipment operates around the clock.
The landfill site stores ash and gypsum, byproducts of the process in which coal is burned to produce electricity as well as the plant's emissions-control mechanism.
