MONTGOMERY, W.Va. -- A vehicle struck and killed a 4-year-old girl in the southbound lane of W.Va. 61 late Monday in the Montgomery Heights area of Fayette County.
At about 9:45 p.m., Fayette County 911 dispatchers received notification that a child had been hit. Gracie L. Naylor, 4, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Fayette County Sheriff's Department news release.
The driver of the vehicle and the child's mother were both transported to Montgomery General Hospital because of emotional trauma. The driver was later transferred to a Charleston Area Medical Center hospital, where her condition is unknown.
A West Virginia State Police accident reconstructionist responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
"The preliminary investigation indicates that this child apparently ran into the traffic lane of the roadway and was struck by the oncoming vehicle," Fayette Sheriff Steve Kessler said in the release. "There is no indication that drug or alcohol abuse was a factor in this collision and, preliminarily, it does not appear that the vehicle was being operated in a reckless manner."
The driver's identity has not been released, and charges are not anticipated, according to the news release.
"This appears to have been just a tragic accident," Kessler said.
The incident is under investigation by Sgt. T.N. Mooney and Cpl. R.K. Perdue of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, and Cpl. C.B. Payne, the accident reconstructionist for the State Police.
Sheriff's deputies, firefighters with the Montgomery Fire Department and Jan Care Ambulance all responded to the scene.
