Manchin faces ex-state lawmaker in U.S. Senate race

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. -- It's been 18 months since Joe Manchin became a U.S. senator. Now he's going after a full six-year term on Capitol Hill, starting with the Democratic primary against an opponent he's faced before.

Former Monongalia County legislator Sheirl Fletcher garnered just 6 percent of the vote in the 2010 special primary two months after the death of U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd. She's using Manchin's actions in office to try to drum up more support for herself in Tuesday's primary.

Manchin come under recent scrutiny about his decisions and party loyalty, in part for saying he's not sure whether he'll vote for President Barack Obama or presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney in November.

If there is a God in Heaven and people in WV smart enough to see tha Manchin is no good for this state, he flip flops all the time, this week he doesnt like obama, next week he will. Time for a change we need to stop electing the good ole boys and elect someone that will listen to what we are saying, after all we hire them, we can fire them.

Anyone who says that Manchin is a rubber stamp for Obama or anything but a Republican in Democrat's clothing (aka DINO) is not really paying attention to his record.

Let's be honest. Manchin is not a Democrat, neither are Rahall or Rockefeller. Capito is not a Republican, neither is McKinley. They are all Coalcancrats. How else can the Fab Five sit mum, refusing to acknowledge science that proves mountaintop removal is killing our citizens and poisoning our babies in the womb? How else can they sit mum while their friends of coal blast and pulverize our mountains to fine particulate toxins that settle in our lungs? How else can they sit mum lifting not a finger to bring new industry jobs to WV? How else can they point a rifle at the Fed EPA which is the only agency that has tried to protect human health in the sacrifice zones of mountaintop removal? End mountaintop removal now, stop killing us.

I believe in private property rights. When driving down the road you may love what you are seeing but if you do not own it then you have no right to tell the owner of the property what they can do with it.Do i like mountian top removal. The answer is no but since I do not own the top of that mountian then I have no right to stop them. Now the top of the mountian that I do own as long as it is mine then it will stay the way it is but when I sell it the new owner will do what they want,

Oh well, they have our best interests at heart.

I own my property and if it gets messy (kids leave stuff in the yard)there is a law in Wheeling that makes me clean it up or I get fined.

I dont understand all the hate for the EPA. If you drive up Cabin Creek it doesnt look like theyve ever turned down a permit. Almost every mountaintop up there has a strip mine on it. Just take a look at google maps if you want to see just how many permits theyve already approved. Cabin Creek has always been portrayed as a wasteland but it was a different world from the tops of those mountains. And now even that is being trashed by humankind. There used to be places there where you could campout next to a 15 ft waterfall flowing through a gorge with wildlife everywhere. Its a strip mine now. I remember a little league baseball game at the end of Cabin Creek the mid 1980's when the game had to be temporarily stopped because of a bear and her cub coming onto the field in the middle of the game. There are strip mines in all directions of that field today. I understand that engergy companies own the land but what they are doing has long term effects on everyone in the community.

Just because someone owns property doesn't mean they can do anything they want on it. I can't sit on my property and shoot at passing traffic or operate a meth lab, for example. Mountaintop removal is much like that. Coal companies can't keep their toxic fallout from leaving the site, and they have no right to poison their neighbors. Manchin and the rest care nothing about the health of West Virginians, otherwise they'd demand a moratorium on MTR now.
