State paid $22K each for Internet routers
Devices made for college campuses now in rural libraries, schools

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Nobody told Hurricane librarian Rebecca Elliot that the $22,600 Internet router in the branch library's storage closet was powerful enough to serve an entire college campus.

Nobody told Elliot how much the router cost or who paid for it. Workers just showed up and installed the device. They left behind no instructions, no user manual.

The high-end router serves four public computer terminals at the small library in Putnam County.

    You've gotta be kidding me.

    What a waste.

Was anyone with any knowledge and/or sense advising the state, on behalf of the state, during this?

I wouldn't doubt that all of these could be sold and the proceeds used to buy appropriate devices, all with expansion capability, for both copper and fiber, with money left over to use to implement more fiber around he state.

I have several wired computers and five wireless devices running through a less than $100 router, plus I pay $7 a month for a modem to connect it to copper. A different modem would connect it to fiber. This would work for many small libraries.

Idiots. Remember this article the next time a politician uses the phrase "bare bones budget" or "we need to increase your taxes".

This is just more abuse of taxpayer money. Here we go again, two know it all government employees who are trying desperately to help poor WV and end up not even coming close. I thought the comment about the comparison to the options being similar to buying a car, were hilarious. Mr. Gianato should have a new position as used car manager at his local are dealership. In other words, FIRE the LOSER...,!!!!

"I'm not an expert on the technical side," [Gianato] said.

I think this was the truest statement he made.

Nice how "Homeland Security" was invoked as a reason to waste this money. Like a router is going to stop a terrorist.

The quintesential tale of government ineptitude, graft, lack of concern that permeates every level of our system. ALL at a time where the left does the ONLY thing it knows to do......raise taxes and get MORE money

Qudo's to the paper, I'm surprised they printed it. I'll bet there are some seriously irratated leftist loons at the Gazette when these articles appear on Sunday

This will never be investigated because the corruption here was at the highest levels. Who do you think told the state what equipment they needed to purchase ? Hint: the ones who already knew they were going to get the contract...

Another example of the incredible lack of fiscal responsibilty/good judgement by our state government officals and the blind eye of the federal government on allowing this extremely wasteful practice to continue. And we wonder why the nation is bankrupt?????

He is all about his power and not about using state funds efficiently.
How can he say that the future needs justify this?

How can someone who admits he's not a technical expert tell if a router will meet the library's needs in the future?

"Nice how "Homeland Security" was invoked as a reason to waste this money. Like a router is going to stop a terrorist".

Now, let's not jump to conclusions! Big as these things are, Mr. Gianato could build a wall out of them to hide behind.

Seriously - why was someone that had no technical qualifications picking the equipment? Why wasn't he spending his time trying to figure out what each site already had and really needed? And network technology continues to evolve at a terrific pace - so NOBODY sizes stuff for more than a couple of years in the future - because two or three years from now, all of these routers will be obsolete!

Mr. Gianato was clearly spending someone else's money, not his own. He should be fired immediately!

And Griner, I'll agree that this is an example of government waste at its finest - but it takes two to tango, and Cisco or the vendor was was happy to take the state's money. Do you think this would have turned out differently had Cisco been in charge?

Rediculous. But when did the Office of Technology ever use common sense? They removed administrator rights to every state pc hindering lots of public employees from doing a good job that the taxpayers are paying them to do. They also have no idea what agencies have wireless and what doesn't, I can testify that first hand, and here they are in charge of technology? A total contradiction. Each agency needs to go back to governing their own networks, they know their agencies' needs better than anyone else.

This is just the tip of the iceberg because in WV state government, waste is the ONLY thing that they know how to do. They do not need another dollar for any of these "special" projects, that they are yammering about all the time. This is exactly why I voted NO on the school board levy, is because of the constant waste of money, no bid contracts going to family members and high staff salaries.

Have any of you all looked up this Gianato guy's bio? In case it's not obvious that his sole qualification is being a Friend of Joe, his previous work was as a car dealer and volunteer fireman. No disrespect to firemen or car dealers, but that's not exactly who I'd look to to launch a statewide broadband initiative, much less "secure" the "homeland."

Now Tell Me 2 claims Cisco would have bought the same router had they been in charge when they clearly recommended a smaller version. What utter nonsense from Tell Me 2.

I guess next Rush and Hannity will focus on WVa as another wasteful area of taxpayer money and make us look more like morons.

What next, lawyers suing for health problems caused in libraries from the oversized routers? Wouldn't surprise me, I've seen crazier things here.

Griner needs to become accustomed to the "utter nonsense" from Tell Me 2.

Rush and Hannity will not make us look like morons. Gianato has already taken care of that. Is poor judgment a requirement for his position?

Eric Eye might write enough information to put Mr. Gianato back in the car selling business.

This is beyond bizarre. This is the most blatant waste of money in the history of the education system. Are these the dumbest people on earth? What kind of rationale is "...wanting the same student in McDowell County to have the same opportunity..". Good grief. Do these morons even know what a router does or how it works? And these are IT professionals? Those responsible should be relieved of their duties, reassigned to something they can handle or fired. A $22,000 router, when a $500 model would have delivered the same performance? Typical self proclaimed "elitists" in the school system that imagine themselves to be much smarter than they actually are. Heads need to roll on this one.

I have worked 15 years for WVDOH. We are 49th in State Employee's pay. The salary gap between employees in the same classification can be as much as one of these routers.

I am $12,000 a year behind all the professional engineers in my building with the same or less years of service and same or lower classification.

I am told monthly how they would love to fix this salary gap for me but no money is available. $22,000 for a router is a joke, but I see this much wasted on a daily basis.

The WVDOH also pay millions of dollars for all these contractors to build our highways. WVDDOH then gives bonuses to these contractors for doing their jobs. I have seen these bonuses be in the $100,000 range.

No bonuses for us WVDOH employees doing our jobs. I still can't figure out where this bonus money comes from.

I also see DOH employee's get $20,000 - $30,000/yr in overtime. Where does this money come from?

WV = 100% Re-Election Guaranteed. No Wonder we are 49th.

Here's the deal (and this comes from a very good source) - the state applied for the money but had no plan in place to actually utilize it. All of a sudden, the money shows up and the OIT leadership have a OH CRAP moment. To me, the bigger question is why has the equipment been setting in storage for almost 2 years before depolyment? Another thing - if the broadband deployment is not completed by Feb 2013 the state has to give the federal government the $120+Million back.
