Aerial tramway reopens at W.Va. state park

PIPESTEM, W.Va. -- An aerial tramway that provides a view of Bluestone Gorge has reopened at Pipestem Resort State Park.

The tramway went back into service on Friday. It transports guests to the Mountain Creek Lodge along the Bluestone River. The lodge is only accessible by the tramway.

A routine inspection several weeks ago indicated that two of six sheave wheels used in the turntable unit at the top of Pipestem's 3,600-foot-long aerial tramway were in need of replacement.

Dave Caplinger, park superintendent, says the tramway recently underwent replacement and reassembly of the counterweight system, remounting of the tram cable and completion of a load test.

The repairs took three and a half days to complete. The tramway opened to the public in 1971.
