RED HOUSE, W.Va. -- A single-vehicle crash at the bottom of Red House Hill killed a man around 3:30 a.m. Friday, Putnam County Sheriff Mark Smith said.

Chad Herdman, 28, of Eleanor, was on W.Va. 62 in Red House when his 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee hit a guardrail and stopped on the railroad tracks, Smith said.

Herdman was ejected from the Jeep and thrown 72 feet from the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead about 4:01 a.m., according to the sheriff.

Smith said it appears Herdman was traveling at a high speed and not wearing a seatbelt.
